Political Influence

Events protesting perceived foreign interference in domestic political processes — influence operations, disinformation, media manipulation, backing of political parties, or pressure to shape government policy.

Typical events: protests against foreign-backed candidates; demonstrations against foreign-funded NGOs; incidents targeting political lobbying.

Project Grievance

Protests, strikes, or violence directed at a specific foreign-funded or foreign-operated project — mine, dam, road, or construction site — over local conditions: wages, labour practices, environmental damage, or safety.

Boundary: grievance targets a specific site's conduct, not foreign presence in the country generally (see Sovereignty & Territorial).

Sovereignty & Territorial

Contestation of a foreign power's presence at a national or strategic level — opposition to military bases, troop deployments, territorial claims, or security arrangements seen as compromising sovereignty.

Boundary: the demand is for national-level withdrawal or territorial concession, not reform of a specific site (see Project Grievance).

Military Forces Attacks

Armed kinetic engagements against the target country's military forces and assets — bases, warships, aircraft, convoys, personnel. Distinguished from civilian protest about military presence (which falls under Sovereignty & Territorial).

Typical events: missile and drone strikes on warships; attacks on military bases; armed engagements with military personnel; IED and ambush attacks on convoys.

Diplomatic/Bilateral

Events targeting the bilateral relationship itself — embassy and consulate protests, demonstrations during state visits, responses to specific diplomatic incidents such as expulsions or sanctions.

Economic Competition

Grievances about foreign economic dominance, trade practices, or market competition at a policy or sector level — broader than Project Grievance. Includes protests against foreign goods undercutting local industries, economic dependency, or foreign investment policy.

Domestic (Solidarity)

Events expressing solidarity with politically repressed or marginalised groups within the target country — Tibet, Xinjiang/Uyghurs, Hong Kong democracy movements, and equivalent causes relating to US domestic politics and rights abuses.

Typical events: solidarity rallies at embassies or consulates; commemorations; international protests responding to the foreign power's domestic political actions.

Violence Against Nationals

Physical attacks, killings, kidnappings, or targeted violence against nationals, workers, military personnel, diplomatic facilities, or diaspora communities of the target country.

Typical events: armed attacks on foreign workers at project sites; mob violence targeting diaspora districts; kidnappings; attacks on military convoys or diplomatic premises.

Xenophobia/Anti-Immigration

Violence, discrimination, or exclusionary mobilisation targeting nationals or migrants of the target country as an ethnic or cultural group — driven by hostility toward the people rather than opposition to state policy.

Typical events: hate crimes against diaspora communities; exclusionary campaigns against foreign traders; ethnically targeted violence.

Symbolic/Nationalist

Demonstrations expressing general nationalist opposition to a foreign power without a specific policy grievance — tied to historical anniversaries, national holidays, or broad anti-foreign sentiment. The residual category for expressive rather than instrumental activity.
